KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Coalition Forces gathered July 11 to celebrate Mongolian National Day, which marks the 89th year of Mongolia’s independence. The celebration will end July 13.

In Mongolia, they have Naadam, an annual festival that commemorates the nation’s independence, and is an important part of their culture. Though they cannot host the traditional “the three games of men” here, they brought with them instead other events to show their national pride.

Approximately 70 Mongolian Armed Forces servicemembers – who provide security for Camp Eggers – participated in a ceremony to commemorate the historic day, which was followed by precision drill and martial arts exhibitions.

“This day is the most important day to all Mongolian families all over the world,” said Mongolian Capt. Bat-Erdene, Mongolian Expeditionary Task Force operations officer. “Our (families) spilled their blood to build our country and now we continue their mission and help bring peace to all over the world.”

The drill and martial arts exhibitions demonstrated the Mongolian’s unique military culture and their superb hand-to-hand combat skills. The drill exhibition showed their dedication to training by performing complex movements as a formation and precision handling of a weapon. The Mongolian soldiers also showed their abilities to disarm assailants who use weapons such as assault rifles and knives.

“We are full time soldiers and we have to be prepared every day and our training shows that,” Bat-Erdene said.

Their dedication and high level of training was evident to the spectators.

“The martial arts demonstration was really cool; that was probably my favorite part,” said U.S. Army Sgt. Gloria Maddox, movement control. I think it’s amazing that they’re here contributing to the mission and still find time to prepare for these events.”

The Mongolian soldiers have also been practicing their vocal skills in preparation for a musical performance July 12.

“Their holiday celebrations are always a lot fun so I am really looking forward to the performance,” Maddox said.
